Ubon Ratchathani อุบลราชธานี is a town on the eastern part of Thailand, in the Isaan region. It is popularly known simply as Ubon. The name Ubon Ratchathani means "royal land of lotus blossoms". The town has a population of about 110,000, and serves as the provincial capital for Ubon Ratchathani province.

The town of Ubon Ratchathani was established by Thao Kham Phong, who fled from the courts of King Siribunsan in Vientiane into Siam during the reign of King Taksin, in the 18th century. The town is on the northern bank of the Mun River.

During the Second World War, it was the site of a railway project by the Japanese using prisoners-of-war. A monument in the city park was built by the British POW's in gratitute to the people of Ubon Ratchathani. The town was also a US armed forces base during the Vietnam war.

Today Ubon is cashing in on its appeal as a tourist destination. Every July a Candle Festival is held here to usher in Wan Khao Phansa, the Buddhist Lent, with coincides with the start of the rainy season.

Ubon is now served AirAsia flights from Bangkok. The Ubon Ratchathani International Airport (UBP) also gets regular non-stop flights from Thai Airways.

There are plenty of tuk tuks and songthaews in town. A trip will cost you about ฿20 to ฿40.
