Umm al-Quwain أمّ القيوين, UAE

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Umm al-Quwain (Arabic: أمّ القيوين) is one of the sovereign emirates within the United Arab Emirates. It covers 750 sq km (290 sq mi) and has a population of 62,000 people (2012 estimate).

Human habitation in the Umm al-Quwain area is traced back to some 7,000 years ago. This is based on prehistoric arrowheads and flint tools as well as pottery that were unearth along the shoreline. There is clear evidence that the people living in Umm al-Quwain had established contact with the inhabitants of Mesopotamia in the fifth millennium BC.

The modern history of Umm al-Quwain started only about two hundred years ago, when the Al Ali tribe relocated there from Al-Sinniyah island. In 1775, the sheikhdom of Umm al-Quwain was founded by Sheikh Majid Al Mualla. The sheikhdom accepted British protectorate in 1820 to keep out the Ottomans. It was one of the founding states of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, along with Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah.

The most common way to reach Umm al-Quwain is either to self-drive or to take a taxi from Dubai or Sharjah.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
