Slavonski Brod is a city on the Sava River, in Brod-Posavina county, in eastern Croatia. The city covers 50.27 sq km (19.4 sq mi) and has a population of 60,000 (2011 estimate). It is the sixth largest city in Croatia behind Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and Zadar. Slovonski Brod was named "the most beautiful city in Croatia" by the Croatian National Tourist Board in 2009.

Slavonski Brod is located across the Sava river on the way towards the town of Brod in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As such, it is an important transportation hub and intersection for road and rail transports. A new expressway will pass through the city, as part of the Pan-European Corridor, connecting northern Europe with the Dalmatian coast.

The economy of Slavonski Brod is based on farming and viticulture. The city also has a manufacturing base. It produces locomotives, tramways, automotive parts and heavy machineries.

The area around Slavonski Brod has been inhabited for some eight thousand years. Various powers have ruled the area, among them the Romans, Slavs, the Ottoman Empire and the Austria-Hungarian Empire. It was part of Yugoslavia until the federal republic disintegrated, following which it became part of the independent state of Croatia.

Visiting Slavonski Brod

Slavonski Brod does not have an international airport - it's the largest city in Croatia without one. The nearest major airport is in Zagreb. From Zagreb, you can take a train here. The journey takes two and a half hours. There are also buses connecting Slavonski Brod with major cities in Croatia.
