Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in German, is one of the states of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is part of the former East Germany. The state is the least densely populated in Germany. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern covers an area of 23,174 sq km (8,947 sq mi) but has a population of only 1.6 million people.

The capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Schwerin. The state is bordered by Schleswig-Holstein to the west, Lower Saxony to the southwest, Brandenburg to the south and Poland to the east. It faces the Baltic Sea to the north.

Compared to other states of Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is quite sparsely populated. The state has a coastline facing the Baltic Sea, and includes two of the biggest islands in the country, namely Rügen and Usedom. The state is also known as "state of a thousand lakes" as it has numerous lakes, particularly in the southern part.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is divided into twelve districts (Kreise), which following amendments may be merged to be just six ditricts from 2011. In addition, there are six independent urban districts namely Rostock, Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, Schwerin, Stralsund and Wismar. The coastal parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have been developed into domestic resort towns where watersports such as windsurfing is particularly popular.

Due to its location facing the Baltic Sea, the towns in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania share the architectural style of Hanseatic cities, with similarities to Lübeck, Tallinn and Riga.

Visiting Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

You can fly to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, arriving at the Rostock Airport (RLG). For better flight connections, arrive at the airports in Berlin or Hamburg and then continue to your destination in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by train. There are train services connecting Berlin and Hamburg to major cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, among them Rostock, Schwerin and Stralsund.

The A20 is the main expressway or Autobahn serving the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It runs east-west, connecting Lübeck with Schwerin (via Autobahn A14), Rostock, Greifswald and Neubrandenburg.
