Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, a glacier in Greenland that reaches to the sea. Ilulissat Icefjord is located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The settlement of Ilulissat, which means "icebergs", has a population of slightly over 5,000 people, and is the third largest settlement in Greenland after Nuuk and Sisimiut.

Ilulissat Icefjord runs a distance of 40 kilometers. It is fed on the eastern end by the Sermeq Kujalleq, also known in Danish as Jakobshavn Isbræ, a glacier that produces 10% of all the icebergs in Greenland. Scientific studies carried out on the Sermeq Kujalleq has help us understand more about climate change and glaciology.

Illulissat Icefjord was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 28th session of the World Heritage Committee in Suzhou, China, on 28 June to 7 July, 2004.

Visiting Ilulissat Icefjord

Ilulissat is located in Greenland. Air Iceland has regular flights to Ilulissat from Reykjavik from summer 2009. Nevertheless, to view the glacier, it may be necessary to book a tour with a specialist agency.
