Delft is a town in South Holland, Netherlands. It covers 24.08 sq km (9.3 sq mi) and has a population of 96,000 (2011 estimate). It is the quintessential Dutch town, with its canals, its craft industry centering on Delft Blue pottery and being home to a famous Dutch painter, Vermeer.

Visiting Delft

From Schiphol Airport, you can take a train to Leiden central station, then change trains to reach Delfi. It will take about an hour to do the trip. If you arrive at Rotterdam The Hague Airport, you can take a taxi to Delft for about €35.

Places of Interest in Delft

  1. Legermuseum Delft
    This is the local army museum, housed in a former arsenal. It exhibits weapons, uniforms and other articles related to the Dutch army.

  2. Nieuwe Kerk
    The new church of Delft built between 1381 and 1496. This is where the Dutch royal family has its burial vault.

  3. Oude Delft
    Street beside the canal in Delft, lined with charming Renaissance-style townhouses.

  4. Oude Kerk
    13th century church whose graveyard contains the final resting place of many prominent people.

  5. Stadhuis
    Delft town hall, dating to 1618, was built in the Renaissance style.

  6. Stedelijk Museum Het Prinsenhof
    The house where William of Orange was shot dead in 1584, now a museum, it preserves the bullet hole at the staircase.
