Limburg is a province of the Netherlands on the southeastern part of the country. It forms a geographical wedge between Belgium and Germany. It also borders on the Dutch provinces of Gelderland in the north and North Brabant in the north and northwest. Across on the Belgian side is the Dutch-speaking Belgian province of Limburg and the French-speaking Belgian province of Liège.

Limburg covers 2,153 square kilometers of land and 56 square kilometers of water. It has a population of 1.1 million people (2012 estimate). The province takes its name from the fortified castle town of Limbourg which is today in the Belgian province of Liège.

The people of Limburg have their own language, Limburgish, which has been recognized as an official regional language. The main cities in Limburg are Leeuwarden, Drachten, Sneek, Heerenveen, Harlingen, Dokkum, Franeker, Joure, Wolvega and Lemmer.
