Žilina, located in northwestern Slovakia, is the fourth largest city in the country. Located close to the borders of the Czech Republic and Poland, Žilina covers 80 sq km (30.9 sq mi) and has a population of 85,000 people (2011 estimate).

Žilina is 342 m (1,122 ft) above sea level, at the confluence of the river Váh with the Kysuca and the Rajčanka. It experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Warmest months are July and August, with average high temperatures of 25°C (77°F). January and February are the coldest months, when the average low temperature drops to -5°C (22°F). July is the wettest month, receiving 6.84 cm (2.69 in) of rainfall.

Žilina is today an industrial center for the Váh river basin. It is the home of a major manufacturing plant for Kia Motors, producing some 300,000 cars a year for distribution throughout Europe. The city also has other industries including construction, transportation engineering and paper milling.

The area around Žilina has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The town was first mention in 1208 as Terra de Selinan. It was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918, when it became part of Czechoslovakia. Today Žilina has a well restored old town with many historic buildings.

Visiting Žilina

There are regular train services connecting Žilina with other cities in Europe including Bratislava, Prague, Warsaw and Moscow. There are also buses connecting it with major cities in Slovakia.

Places of Interest in Žilina

  1. Burian Tower
    A 45-m (150-ft) tower built in the Renaissance style. it is topped with a cupola identical to that of the adjacent church.

  2. Church of St Stephen
    This is one of the oldest churches in Slovakia. It houses a number of 14th century wall paintings.

  3. Holy Trinity Cathedral (Najsvätejšie Trojice)
    Church dating to the 1400s.

  4. Main Square (Marianské námestie)
    Market square at the center of the Old Town with arcades lining its four sides, surrounded by some of the important attractions in town including the Old Town hall, the Church of St Paul and the Jesuit monastery.

  5. Museum of Art (Považská galéria)
    Museum showcasing the works of local Slovak artists.
