Canary Islands (Spanish: Islas Canarias) is a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa. The islands are an autonomous community of Spain. They cover 7,493 sq km (2,893 sq mi) and have a population of 2.2 million people (2012 estimate).

The cities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife take turns to be capital of the Canary Islands. They are also the provincial capital of the province of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife respectively.

The main islands of the Canary Islands are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Losos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. Of these, Tenerife is by far the biggest and most populous.
