The city of Aarau sits on a steep rocky terrace of the Aare valley below the Jura mountains. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. During Roman times, a wooden bridge was built across the river Aare. Remains of that bridge was discovered by divers in 1976.

The modern city of Aarau was founded by the Counts of Kyburg in 1240. The earliest written mention of the city appears in 1248, when it was described as Arowe. It was part of Habsburg territory until 1415, when it passed into Bernese control.

Most of the inhabitants of Aarau speak German (81.7%). This represents a drop from 1880s, when the German-speaking population ranked at 99.2%. Close to half the population are Protestants of the Swiss Reformed Church (49.7%) while Roman Catholics form 33% of the people.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
