Archaeological evidence indicates that the Ascona area has been inhabited since the Late Bronze Age. This is based on the discovery of twenty-one cremation urns from that period. This is also a Roman-period necropolis with 38 tombs that was discovered at the foot of Castle of S. Materno. At the church of S. Sebastiano, there are 60 graves from the Early Middle Ages.

One of the oldest churches in Ascona, the Church of SS Peter and Paul, was first mentioned in 1264 while the Church of S. Maria della Misericordia was built by 1442. In the early part of its history, Ascona was closely linked to Locarno.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Ascona depended largely on farming as its chief local economy. It also had linen production and mills, providing some job opportunities to the locals. From the second half of the 20th century onwards, Ascona began to evolve into a tourist destination. Today the majority of its population speak Italian (66%), followed by German (23.9%) and Serbo-Croatian (2.5%). The town is listed on the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. It has eleven heritage sites of national significance.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
