Bellinzona is the capital of Ticino canton in Switzerland. Located 238 m (781 ft) above sea level, it covers 19.15 sq km (7.39 sq mi) and has a population of 17,000 people (2012 estimate).

Bellizona is located on the eastern side of the Ticino River. It is today famous for its three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, which are designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites since 2000.

Human presence in the Bellizona area has been discovered as early as the early Neolithic age. The Romans under Emperor Augustus built a fort here in the late 1st century BC. When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, a succession of states ruled the area. Bellinzona joined the Swiss Confederation on 14 April, 1500.

Most of the people of Bellizona speak Italian (87.4%) with German being the second most common language (3.6%) followed by Serbo-Croatian (3.5%). Roman Catholic is the predominant religion here, with 74% going to the Roman Catholic church compared to 4% for the Swiss Reformed Church.
