Riehen is a small city within Basel-Stadt canton, one of three municipalities of the canton. Located to the northeast of downtown Basel, Riehen has managed to preserve its charming Old Town with lovely country houses. Covering 10.86 sq km (4.19 sq mi), on an elevation of 278 m (912 ft), Riehen has a population of 21,000 (2011 estimate).

The history of Riehen goes back to 1157, the year it was mentioned for the first time. The town today has a number of museums related not only to its history but also to a wide range of subjects.

Riehen is predominantly German-speaking (90.9%). 36.6% of the population attend the Swiss Reformed Church, while 23% the Roman Catholic Church. There are also a small percentage of members of the Orthodox church as well as other faiths.
