Tithes is money collected for God's work, from running of the church to funding missionary work. Different churches have different concepts with regards to this. Many regard one tenth of your earning as the appropriate amount.
You should give according to your ability and your heart's desire, and not just to the church that you belong, but also to any good course that advances the Gospel.
