Taroudant (تارودانت) is a city in the Sous Valley in southern Morocco. It has a population of around 66,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is located south of Marrakesh, on the road to Ouarzazate. A well preserved city, Tatoudant is almost entirely located within its medieval walls. It is often called the Grandmother of Marrakesh due to the similarity between the two cities, except that Marrakesh is much larger.

Taroudant has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the 11th century, the settlement was occupied by the Almoravids. It reached its golden age in the 16th century under the Saadi Dynasty when under the rule of Mohammed ash-Sheikh, Taroudant saw a spur of construction, including the building of the great mosque in 1528.

Today Taroudant is renowned for its crafts, particularly jewelry and carpets, as well as for its market place, the souk, which is located near its two main squares. The city still retains its walls which measure some 6 km in length. These are punctuated by nine gates.

A bustling place in Taroudant today is the Berber market, or Jnane al-Jaami, a place where you can see the locals congregating to buy or sell goods ranging from fruits to household items. In comparison the Arab market place, or souk, sells terracotta pots, brass and copperware, leather goods, rugs and jewelry.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
