Grand Bahama is one of the major islands of the Bahamas. It is the northernmost as well as closest major Bahama island to mainland United States, located just 90 km (56 mi) from the coast of Florida. Grand Bahama covers 1,373 sq km (530.1 sq mi), making it the fifth largest island in the Bahamas. It has a population of 52,000 people (2012 estimate), and is the location of Freeport, the second biggest city in Bahamas.

The island of Grand Bahama got its name from the Spanish, who named it Gran Bajamar, meaning "the great shallow seas". It is through Grand Bahama that the rest of the Bahamas eventually was named. Originally controlled by the Spanish, it was taken over by the British in 1670.

Grand Bahama was a sparsely populated island until the 19th century, when the British began to establish townships on the island. These are mainly populated by former slaves following the abolition of slavery in the British empire. The economy of Grand Bahama received a boost during the American Civil War, when it became a center for the smuggling of goods, mostly weaponry, in aid of the Confederacy. A second wave of smuggling occurred during the years of Prohibition.

Today, as in elsewhere in the Bahamas, Grand Bahama depend on touristm as the mainstay of its economy. The island is surrounded by pristine, clear-blue seas, with many beautiful beaches. The main townships and settlements on the island include Freeport, Lucaya, West End and Mc Leans Town.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
