Corozal Town is a town on the northern part of Belize. It is the district capital of the eponymous district. The city is located some 84 miles to the north of Belize City, close to the border with Mexico. It has a population of close to 10,000 people (2011 estimate).

Modern Corozal Town dates back to the Maya period, when it may have been a city known as Chetumal, also called Santa Rita in Spanish. There is however no continuity between the settlement of Chetumal and that of modern Corozal. There is also a modern town called Chetumal, which means "place of the red wood", right across the border on the Mexican side of the Yucatán peninsula.

Corozal dates to the 1840s, when the mostly Mestizo refugees fled the Caste War of Yucatán. Even in Corozal the Mestizos still suffered attacks from the natives who were antagonistic against Mestizos, whom they regarded as allies to the Spaniards.

Visiting Corozal Town

You can reach Corozal Town by taking a bus from Chetumal in Mexico. The journey from there only takes about half an hour.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
