San Ignacio is a town in western central Belize. With a population of about 16,000 people (2011 estimate), it is the main town and district capital of Cayo District. The town is located on the banks of the Macal and Mopan rivers. It is about 35 km (22 mi) from the national capital, Belmopan, and 115 km (68.5 mi) from Belize City.

San Ignacio was established during British colonial times as the area was rich in mahogany and chicle. The early settlers comprised Mestizos and Kriols. Joining them later were Lebananese and Mopan. There was also a wave of Cantonese-speaking settlers who came from Guangzhou in the mid 20th century.

San Ignacio has the only suspension bridge in Belize. It connects the town with the village of Santa Elena. Together, these two entites form the second largest urban area in the country.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
