Cities and Sights in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan (SK) is one of the three Prairie Provinces of Canada, along with Manitoba and Alberta. It covers 588,276 sq km (227,100 sq mi) and has a population of slightly over a million people (2012 estimate). The province is bordered by Alberta to the west, Manitoba to the east, Northwest Territories to the north and the US states of Montana and North Dakota to the south.

Human habitation in the Saskatchewan area goes back thousands of years. It was inhabited by various indigenous groups including the Athabaskan, Algonquian, Atsina, Cree, Saulteaux and Sioux when Europeans arrived. Fur trader and explorer Henry Kelsey is said to be the first European to enter the Saskatchewan area in 1690. The first European settlement came much later, in 1774, set up as a trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company by Samuel Hearne.

The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 transferred part of what is present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan from France to the United States. It was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1818. Much of Saskatchewan became formerly part of Rupert's Land, the watershed area of Hudson Bay, and was controlled by the Hudson's Bay Company. The Hudson's Bay Company was acquired by Canada in 1870, and became part of North-West Territories.

Saskatchewan became a Canadian province on 1 September, 1905. Today it has 14 seats in the 308-seat Canadian House of Commons and 6 seats in the 105-seat Senate of Canada. English and French are the official languages here. The capital of Saskatchewan is Regina while the biggest city is Saskatoon.

The economy of Saskatchewan is traditionally based on agriculture, but has since diversified to include services, forestry, fishing, hunting, oil and natural gas. The services industry such as finance, insurance, real estate and leasing today account for the biggest portion of the economy, at 17.1% (2006).
