Comayagua is a small city in Honduras, about 80 km to the northwest of the capital Tegucigalpa. It is the provincial capital of Comayagua department. The city has a long history that is related to that of Honduras as a whole. It has a well preserved old town and a population of about 60,000 people (2011 estimate).

Comayagua was founded by Conquistador Alonso de Cáceres for the Governor of Yucatán in 1537. It was originally called Santa Maria de la Nueva Valladolid. It became the capital of Honduras province in 1540, when Honduras was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala.

Comayagua continued to play a role as a capital city throughout its history, for the Intendencia of Comayagua from 1786 until 1820, and for the Province of Comayagua from 1820 until independence, for the newly independence state of Honduras, eventually alternating the role with Tegucigalpa, before the latter assumed permanent position as capital of Honduras in 1880.

The well-preserved Old Town of Camayagua has in recent years made it an increasingly important tourist destination for Honduras. Many of its historic buildings are located around or within walking distance of its central plaza.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
