Paysandú is a city on the banks of the Uruguay River, which separates Uruguay from Argentina. It has a population of 127,000 (2011 estimate), and is the provincial capital of the eponymous department. The city is located to the north of the General Artigas Bridge which crosses the Uruguay River, connect it with the Argentine city of Colón.

Paysandú was established in 1749. In the 19th century, it attracted settlers from all over Europe, particularly from Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Russian, Ukraine and Belgium, giving the city its cosmopolitan feel today.

Paysandú experiences a subtropical climate. Hottest month is January, when the average high temperature touches 31°C. Coldest months are June and July, with average lows of 8°C. March is the wettest month, receiving 127 mm of precipitation.

The mainstay of Paysandú's economy is the lumber industry based on plantation forests of planted Eucalyptus. Other industries include a brewery, a sugar mill and a leather factory.

The Tydeo Larre Borges International Airport (PDU) is lcoated 6 km (4 mi) from downtown Paysandú. It receives regular flights from Montevideo.
