Punta del Este is a resort town facing the Atlantic Ocean, at the southernmost part of Uruguay. It is a small town with a population of 7,300 people (2011 estimate), where tourists outnumber the locals several folds. Located 140 km (87 mi) from Montevideo, it is the choice beach resort for the rich from Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

Punta del Este was first explored by the Spanish in the 16th century. No permanent settlement was established there until the Portuguese came along in the 18th century. A botanical garden was started here by Uruguayan arboricultorist Antonio Lussich in 1896.

Punta del Este has gone down in history for being the venue of several important meetings, including the American Summit of 1967, attended by US president Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations of 1986, which led to the creation of the World Trade Organization in 1994.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
