Alabama is a state in the southeastern part of the United States of America. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south and Mississippi to the west. A narrow part of Alabama also reaches the coast at the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama covers an area of 52,419 square miles (135,765 sq km). Its biggest city is Birmingham, with a population of around 230,000, while its capital is Montgomery. The state has a population of 4.6 million people, and ranks 23rd in terms of population.

The history of Alabama goes back to 1540 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soso arrived there. The first European settlement in Alabama was only established in 1702 by the French at Fort Louis de la Mobile. The British gained control of the area from the French in 1763, but had to cede it to the United States and Spain following the American Revolution.

Travel within Alabama

The most practical way to explore Alabama is by car. That way, you can stop anywhere you like to admire the scenery. Most of the interstate highways converge in Birmingham, with the rest in Montgomery and Mobile.
