Aniakchak National Monument & Preserve is a protected area surrounding the Aniakchak Volcano in southwestern Alaska. The site was proclaimed a national monument on 1 December, 1978, with 137,176 acres (555 sq km). Two years later on 2 December, 1980, it was established as a national monument and preserve. The preserve covers 465,603 acres (1,884 sq km), bringing the total area to 602,779 acres (2,439 sq km).

Aniakchak Volcano is located on the Aleutian Range. The 4,400 ft (1,341 m) volcano has a 3,400-year-old caldera that measures 6 miles (10 km) in diameter. The Aniakchak area is within the Pacific Ring of Fire. The monument has a number of volcanic features such as lava flows and cinder cones.

Due to its remote location, Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve is the least visited unit of the National Park System. In the whole of 2004 it received less than 300 recreational visits.

Visiting Aniakchak National Monument & Preserve, Alaska

Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve is located some 450 miles to the southwest of Anchorage. The area cannot be reached by road, and its rather temperamental weather means flights in and out are a touch-and-go matter.

To get you, you need to take an air taxi chartered flight from King Salmon, Alaska or any of the neighboring small towns.
