The inhabitants of the Appleton area when the first Europeans arrived were Fox River Valley Indians. One of the earliest Europeans to settle in the area was Hippolyte Grignon, who built a house there in 1835. Called the White Heron, it also served as an inn and trading store.

The settlement of Appleton was created in 1847. It was incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a city in 1857. The city was a center for the paper-making industry. To power the paper milkls, the first hydroelectric station was built on the Fox River, becoming operational in 1882.

Appleton has chalked up a number of other firsts, including the first successful electric streetcar, in 1886, the first telephone in Wisconsin, the first incandescent light in any city of the East Coast, and in 1954, the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States (though this particular claim is disputed by other malls).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
