Aurora is the second largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Located just 35 miles (57 km) from downtown Chicago, it is in fact part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city covers 39.42 sq mi (102 sq km) and has a population of around 200,000 (2011 estimate).

Aurora was one of the first cities in the United States to fully electrify its street lights in 1881, leading it to claim the title of "City of Lights". Much of the city is in Kane County, though it spreads over to three other counties, DuPage County, Kendall County and Will Country.

The warmest month in Aurora is July, when the average temperature reaches 84°F (28.9°C). It is also the wettest month, with 4.34 in (111.5 mm) of precipitation. Coldest month is January, when it drops to just 10°F (-12.2°C).
