Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Arizona

Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is a national monument in Coolidge, Arizona. Located to the northeast of Casa Grande, it celebrates and preserves the ancient ruins of the Hohokam people, an ancient Sonoran desert Native American farming community.

The ancient ruins of Casa Grande were built of sedimentary rock called caliche, by the Hohokam people who lived in the Gila Valley area in the early 13th century. They constructed abodes with compound walls. These structures become known as Casa Grande, or "big house" in Spanish, in reference to the biggest of the ruins, which is four storys tall.

The Hohokam people abandoned the structures in the mid-15th century. Nonetheless the structures survived the harsh climate for over seven centuries. Some of them bear graffiti scratched onto their walls by 19th century passers-by.

In 1932 a modern shelter was built to shade the Casa Grande ruins. The ruins were the Casa Grande Reservation by President Benjamin Harrison on 22 June, 1892, and redesignated a national monument by President Woodrow Wilson on 3 August, 1918.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
