Cincinnati is the third largest city in Ohio. It is also the county seat of Hamilton County. The city is located to the north of the Ohio River, on the Ohio-Kentucky River. It has a population of about 300,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area that has a population of 2.1 million people.

Cincinnati was founded in 1788 by John Cleves Symmes and Colonel Robert Patterson. It was originally called Losantiville, a name created to mean "city opposite the estuary of the Licking River".

That mouthful of a name lasted only two years. In 1790, it was renamed Cincinnati by Arthur St Clair, the governor of the then Northwest Territory. St Clair was a member of the Society of Cincinnati, a historical organization named after Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a historical figure from Roman times.

Cincinnati covers 79.6 sq mi (210 sq km). It includes hills and low ridges with views of the Ohio River. Located in the Midwest, it experiences a transitional climate between humid subtropical and humid continental. July is the warmest month, when the average temperature can reach 86.4°F (30.22°C). Coldest month is January, when the termometer goes down to 21.3°F (-5.9°C).

Visiting Cincinnati, Ohio

A few Interstate highways serve the city of Cincinnati. The I-71 passes through the city from northeast to southwest. The I-74 approaches the city from the west, the I-75 approaches from the south, while the I-275 forms a ring road around the city.

If you're flying in, you will land at the Cincinnati/Kentucky International Airport (CVG), which is on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. The airport is a hub for Delta Air Lines.
