Colorado is a landlocked state in the western region of the United States. It includes most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern part of the Colorado Plateau. It was the 38th state to join the Union, and was nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it entered the Union on the Centennial Year of the United States Declaration of Indepedence.

Colorado covers an area of 104,185 sq miles (269,837 sq km). It is 380 miles from east to west and and 280 miles from north to south. It has a population of 5 million people. The highest point in Colorado is Mount Elbert (14,440 feet, 4401 meters) while the lowest point is the Arikaree River, which is still 3,317 feet (1,011 meters) above sea level. Thirty of the highest major peaks of the Rocky Mountains are located within Colorado. There are many resorts and tourist destinations in Colorado, particularly in the Rocky Mountains.

Colorado shares a border with Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Arizona at a common point known as the Four Corners at the southwest, and Utah to the west.

The existence of high mountains and valleys greatly affect the local climate of the state. It experiences extremity in weather conditions. In the summer, some of its cities may get temperatures exceeding 95°F (35°C) while in winter, the temperature may drop to -10°F (-23.3°C) or even lower. The highest recorded temperature in Colorado was 118°F (48°C) in Bennett, on 11 July, 1888, while the lowest was -61°F (-51.7°C) in Maybell on 1 February, 1985.

Travel to Colorado

The Denver International Airport (DEN), which is the ninth busiest airport in the world, is the main gateway to Colorado. Arriving from there, you can take a transfer flight to the other cities in the state.

You can also take the train to Colorado. Amtrak runs the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago stopping in Denver, among others.

Travel within Colorado

As with most states in America, you should rent a car if you want to explore Colorado extensively. This can be done at the airport. There are many scenic places in Colorado that is best reached by car.
