Columbia is the capital and largest city in South Carolina. It is also the county seat of Richland County, with a portion of it extending into Lexington County. Located at an elevation of 292 ft (89 m), Columbia covers 133.8 sq mi (346.5 sq km) and has a population of 129,000 (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 770,000 people.

Columbia is geographic close to the very heart of South Carolina - it's 13 miles from the center. It is at the confluence of the Saluda and Broad rivers, which merge to form the Congaree River at Columbia.

The history of Columbia goes back to 1786. The choice of site was determined to a large extend by Columbia's geographical location near the center of South Carolina. It was incorporated as a city in 1854. The city was designed from scratch to be a two-mile square comprising 400 blocks.

Today Columbia is a modern city was a diversified economy. It is home to SCANA, the only Fortune 500 company in South Carolina, based in the suburb of Cayce.

Visiting Columbia, South Carolina

Three interstate highways converge on Columbia. The I-20 crosses from southwest to east, connecting it with Augusta in the west and Florence in the east. I-26 passes from northwest to southeast, connecting it with Greenville in the northwest and Charleston in the southeast. I-77 runs north from Columbia towards Charlotte.

You can also fly to Columbia, landing at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). The airport is served by flights from major cities in the United States.
