Daytona Beach is home to NASCAR (The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) and the Grand American Road Racing Association. Among the most prestigious of these races is the Daytona 500. The city experiences an influx of visitors whenever a motorsports event is held.

The area of Daytona Beach were inhabited by the Timucuan Native Americans, with the Seminole Indians frequenting it, right up to the Second Seminole War of 1835-1842. When the area was ruled by the British, a road was built linking St Augustine, the capital of East Florida, with the new, experimental colony of New Smyrna, passing through Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach has a wide expanse of smooth beach. It attracted motorsports enthusiasts since the turn of the 20th century, with automobile and motorcycle inventors bringing their machines here for testing. In 1926, the towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze were merged under the name of Daytona Beach, and the area was marketed as the world's most famous beach. The city has remained the destination of motorsports enthusiasts since.
