More on Fort Lauderdale FL

The city of Fort Lauderdale was named after a series of forts built during the Second Seminole War, between 1835 and 1842, fought between the United States and various groups of Native Americans. The forts were named after Major William Lauderdale, who had the first fort built. There were three fortifications of Fort Lauderdale erected.

Until the 20th century, the city of Fort Lauderdale was known as New River Settlement. It was only incorporated as Fort Lauderdale in 1911, and four years later was made the county seat of Broward County.

A US naval base was set up in Fort Lauderdale at the start of the Second World War. At the end of the war, the city experienced a big population increase, with an influx of war veterans and service members. The population growth eventually leveled off in the 1980's, as the city reinvented itself into one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
