Georgia is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. It was founded in 1732 and named after King George II of Great Britain. Georgia was the last of the original Thirteen Colonies which declared their independence from Britain in the American Revolution, resulting in the formation of the United States of America.

Georgia covers an area of 59,425 sq miles (153,909 sq km). It is the largest state east of the Mississippi in terms of land area, and fourth largest in total area (inclusive bodies of water). Georgia has a population of 9.8 million people, making it the 9th most populous state in the country.

The state of Georgia is bordered by Tennessee to the north, North Carolina to the northeast, South Carolina to the east, Florida to the south and Alabama to the west.

Georgia experiences a humid subtropical climate. The state is prone to tornadoes, including one which hit downtown Atlanta on 14 March, 2008, causing some damage. The state, especially the coastal areas, is also vulnerable to hurricanes. On the other hand it has also went through severe droughts in 2006 and 2007.

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is one of the largest airports in the United States. It is also the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic and number of landings and take-offs.

Travel within Georgia

The most convenient way to explore Georgia is by car. One can be rented upon arrival at the airport.

The main highways in Georgia are Interstate 75 and Interstate 85. Other important highways in Georgia includes the I-95, I-20, I-16, I-59 and I-24. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is the main rapid transit system operator in Atlanta.
