Minnesota is a state covering an area of 86,939 sq mi (225,181 sq km) in the Upper Midwest, on the northern part of the United States. It shares a land border with Wisconsin to the east, Iowa to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north.

The state is the northernmost in the United States after Alaska. It is the only state within the 48 contiguous states with a section lying north of the 49th Parallel.

Minnesota has a population of 5.3 million people. Its largest city is Minneapolis while its capital is Saint Paul. Together, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area has an estimated population of 3.5 million people.

Minnesota has some of the oldest rocks on earth, some dating back 3.6 billions years, which is 80% of the age of the planet itself. The highest point in the state is Eagle Mountain, which is 2,301 ft (701 m) tall, yet just 13 miles (20 km) from the shore of Lake Superior, which is 602 ft (183 m) above sea level.

The state is often called The Land of 10,000 Lakes because there are in fact 11,842 lakes in Minnesota which are above 10 acres in size.

Visiting Minnesota

The best way to travel to and within Minnesota is by car. Interstate-94 Highway enters the state from North Dakota while I-90 enters from South Dakota. I-94 and I-90 continues west to Wisconsin. You can also reach Minnesota on I-35 from Des Moines in Iowa. Minneapolis is the hub for all the interstate highways.

Minnesota boasts the fifth largest median income per household in the United States and thirty seven of the top Fortune 1000 companies have chosen Minnesota office space for their headquarters.
