Newark, Delaware

Newark is a city in New Castle County, Delaware. Founded in 1694, it covers 8.9 sq mi (23.1 sq km) and has a population of 31,500 (2011 estimate). The city was established by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers, who received a charter from King George II in 1758.

During the American Revolutionary War, Newark saw intense fighting between British and American forces just outside the city, in what is known as the Battle of Cooch's Bridge. That was when the American flag, the Stars and Stripes, was flown in battle for the first time.

Today Newark is a university town, being home to the University of Delaware (UD), which is famous for its business, chemical engineering, chemistry and biochemistry programs. The city is also a center for figure skating, and has produced many national, world and Olympic champions in that field.

You can reach Newark on Interstate 95, leaving the highway at Exit 109.
