Newark has a population of 277,000 (2011 estimate). Covering just 26 sq mi (67.3 sq km), it is the second smallest area - after neighboring Jersey City - among the 100 most populous cities in the country. Located just 8 miles (13 km) west of Manhattan, Newark is part of the New York City metropolitan area, which has a population of 18 million people. It is located immediately west of Jersey City, which is between Newark and Manhattan.

Newark was founded in 1666 by the Puritans from Connecticut. It experienced rapid growth particularly in the 19th and early 20th century. By the end part of the 20th century, the city center has become crime-ridden, once earning the dubious title of Most Dangerous City in the Nation from Time Magazine in 1996. However, since then crime and murder rates have dropped significantly.

The economy of Newark is based on transportation and financial services. Port Newark, which is part of the Port of New York and New Jersey, has a major cargo facility. The city is also home to a number of insurance companies including Prudential Financial and Mutual Benefit Life.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
