Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city in the state of Oklahoma. The city, which is near the very center of Oklahoma, has a population of around 580,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area of 1.25 million people. Covering 621.2 sq mi (1,608.8 sq km) it is the eighth largest city in the United States in terms of land area, and the largest to not be confined within a single county.

Oklahoma City was founded during the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889, when unassigned lands were given out to individuals. As a result of the land run, the city was created with an immediate population of 10,000. When Oklahoma state was admitted to the Union in 1907, the capital was Guthrie. However, by then the population and importance of Oklahoma City has outstrip Guthrie, so eventually the capital was relocated to Oklahoma City.

The economy of Oklahoma City is based on it being the biggest livestock market in the world. Other important components of its economy include oil, natural gas and petroleum products.

Oklahoma City is the site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, which suffered a bomb attack on 19 April, 1995. The city has also suffered from numerous tornadoes, including one of the most powerful on record, which hit Oklahoma City on 3 May, 1999.

Oklahoma City enjoys a humid subtropical climate. The warmest month is July, when the average temperature goes up to 82°F(27.8°C), while the coolest month is January, when the average temperature goes down to 36.7°F (2.6°C).

Three Interstate highways connect Oklahoma City with the rest of the country. The I-35 passes through from north to south, connecting Oklahoma City with Wichita, Kansas in the north and Fort Worth/Dallas in the south. I-44 connects Oklahoma City with Tulsa to the northeast and Wichita Falls to the southwest. I-40 runs east-west through Oklahoma City, connecting it with Amarillo, Texas, in the west and Little Rock, Arkansas, in the east.
