Prescott is a city in Yavapai County in central Arizona. Pronounced "Pres-skit" rather than "Pres-cott", the city covers 41.5 sq mi (107.5 sq km) and has a population of around 43,000 (2011 estimate).

Prescott was named after historian William H. Prescott. The town was founded on 30 May, 1864 after the area was selected by Governor John Noble Goodwin. It served as the capital of the then Arizona Territory from then until 1 November 1867, when the capital was relocated to Tucson. It was again the capital from 1877 until 4 February, 1889, when the 15th Arizona Territorial Legislature moved it to Phoenix, where it remains to this day.

Due to its history as capital, Prescott counts some 809 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the buildings are of Victorian style. The historic core of the city is called Whiskey Row. It was until 1956 a notorious red-light district.

The city of Prescott today hosts many annual events and festivals. Among them include the World's Oldest Rodeo (since 1888), Earth Day, Bluegrass Festival, Cinco de Mayo celebration, Navajo Rug Auction, Folk Arts Fair, and many more.

State Route 69 connects Prescott to Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction. You can also take State Route 89 south from Interstate 40 to Prescott.
