Stamford is the fourth largest city in Connecticut and the 8th largest in New England. Located in Fairfield County in th southwestern point of Connecticut, it covers 52.1 sq mi (134.9 sq km) and has a population of 123,000 (2011 estimate). The city is within the Greater New York metropolitan area. It observes the Eastern Standard Time, which is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-5), and four hours behind during Daylight Saving Time in summer.

Stamford experiences a humid continental climate. The warmest month is July, when the average high temperature regularly reaches 85°F (29.4°C). January is the coldest month, during which average low temperature dips to 19°F (-7.2°C). Precipitation is quite fairly spreadly throughout the year, though May is the wettest month with 4.97 in (126 mm) of rain.

The history of Stamford goes back to 1 July, 1640, when Captain Turner of the New Haven County signed a deed with Chief Ponus. Until then, the site was known as Rippowam in the Native American language. As with Salem, Stamford also had an albeit less well-known witch trial.

As early as the late 19th century Stamford had already become a bedroom community for people working in Manhattan, and commuting by train to work. Its city center underwent a massive redevelopment in the 1970's as several New York City corporations relocated to Stamford, resulting in a building boom that added a number of skyscrapers to the skyline.
