Texas is the second biggest state in the United States, in terms of size as well as population. It is also the largest state within the contiguous United States. Texas covers an area of 268,581 sq mi (696,241 sq km). It measures 790 miles (1,270 km) from east to west and 773 miles (1,244 km) from north to south.

Texas is bordered by Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, Louisiana to the east, and New Mexico to the west. It also shares an international border with Mexico to the south and faces the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. The highest point in Texas is the Guadalupe Peak, at 8,751 ft (2,667m).

Texas has a population of 24.8 million people, according to 2010 estimation. Its largest city is Houston while its capital is Austin. The largest metropolitan area in the state is Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington.

Texas was known as the Republic of Texas before statehood on 29 December, 1845. It was the 28th state admitted into the United States. It is located within two time zones. Much of Texas is within the Central time zone (-6/-5 GMT) while the western tip of Texas is in the Mountain time zone (-7/-6 GMT). The abbreviation for Texas is TX.

By Plane
There are a number of international airports in Texas. The busiest is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), which is the second busiest airport in the United States. The second largest airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) serving Houston.

By Road
Texas is a vast state. It explore it may take weeks. Driving provides you the best option in going from place to place. There are a number of interstate highways serving Texas. I-40 cust across northern Texas through Amarillo. I-20, I-35 and I-45 all pass though the Dallas / Fort Worth metropolitan area, with I-35 connecting Dallas with Austin and San Antonio. I-10 goes from east to west passing through San Antonio and Houston.
