Winston-Salem is located in the northwest piedmont area of North Carolina. It comprises two towns which merged in 1913. The town of Salem was established in 1753 while the town of Winston in 1849. Both towns were closely related to the tobacco industry.

The chief player in the industry is the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, established by Richard Joshua Reynolds in 1874. The company created Camel cigarettes in 1913 and brought out other popular cigarette brands including Salem and Winston.
