Coro is the oldest city in western Venezuela. Its full name is Santa Ana de Coro. The city is the state capital of Falcón State. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1527 and served as the first capital of Venezuela. Today it has a well-preserved historic center. Coro and its port were recognized by UNESCO in 1993 as a World Heritage Site.

Due to its charming architecture, Coro has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in Venezuela. The buildings in the historic center exhibits a variety of architecture styles. They include the Spanish Mudéjar style as well as the Dutch style influenced by the colony of Curaçao.

Many of the traditional buildings in Coro are earthern buildings, or adobe. As such, they are particularly vulnerable to the elements. Heavy rainfalls in 2004 and 2005 caused severe damage to many of these buildings, leading UNESCO to place it on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2005.
