Chan She Shu Yuen 陳氏書院, Kuala Lumpur

Chan Seh Shu Yuen Clan AssociationChan Seh Shu Yuen Clan Association (2 January, 2010)

Chan She Shu Yuen 陳氏書院 (GPS: 3.14015, 101.6985) is the clan association and associated clan temple of the Chan clansmen in Kuala Lumpur. It is located along Jalan Stadium, facing the Bulatan Merdeka fountain, across the road from the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association was established by four Chan clansmen namely Chan Siow Ling, Chan Xin Xi, Chan Chun and Chan Zai Tian, who were the pillars of local society in late 19th century Kuala Lumpur. As with most of the Chinese clan associations, the Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association serves as the start off point for most of the newly arrived immigrants. The association offer shelter and support to the newcomers while they gained their footing in the new land.

The clan association building of the Chan clan was modelled after the Chan Clan Ancestral Temple in Guangzhou. Construction began in 1896 and progressed intermittently. It was only completed a decade later, in 1906. The colour scheme is green, leading the building to be called the Green Temple.

The entrance of Chan Seh Shu Yuen is flanked by a pair of guardian lions. Beyond the front gate is a central courtyard followed by the ancestral hall, where the patron deities of the Chan clan are installed.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
