Sønderborg is a small town on the island of Als in southern Denmark, near the border with Germany. Covering an area of 496.57 sq km (191.7 sq mi), Sønderborg has a population of 27,000 (2011 estimate).

Sønderborg was named after the local castle, Sønderborg Slot, which was built in 1170 by Valdemar I. Over the centuries, the castle has played many different roles, as its intended purpose as well as being a prison (to Christian II for 17 years in the early 16th century), as a warehouse, as hospital, as military barracks and presently, as a museum.

The town of Sønderborg saw heavy fighting between Denmarki and Prussia during the Second Schleswig War of 1864. The battle damaged the local windmill, Dybbøl Mølle, which has been rebuilt and today stands as a national symbol. Denmark lost the war, which saw Sønderborg and much of southern Jutland being annexed into Prussia, and remained part of Germany until 1920.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
