Aveiro is a city in Aveiro District in Portugal. With a population of around 75,000 people, it is the second most populous city of the Centro Region after Coimbra. Aveiro is also the seat of the Aveiro Municipality, which comprises 14 parishes.

The city of Aveiro has a history going back to the 10th century. It was originally known by its Latin name, Alavarium, which means "the gathering place of birds". It was conquered by the Moors and was under their rule until the 11th century.

Today Aveiro is famous for its production of salt and the harvesting of seaweed which is used for the making of fertilizer.

Going to Aveiro

You can take the train to Aveiro from Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon. The central railway station located in the city center.
