Tomsk (Russian: Томск) is a city on the Tom River in Siberia, Russia. Covering 297.2 sq km (114.7 sq mi), it has a population of 523,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the administrative center of Tomsk Oblast.

Established by Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604, Tomsk celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2004. It is one of the oldest cities in Siberia. The city began as a fortress on the Tom River. It was built to provide the local duke protection against Kirghiz robbers.

Tomsk was made the seat of the Tomsk Governorate in 1804. The discovery of gold in 1830 brought rapid development and an influx of immigrants. However when the city was bypassed by the Trans-Siberian Railway line, attention moved from it towards Novosibirsk.

You can fly to Tomsk from Moscow, Novosibirsk, Omsk and other major cities in Russia. A branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway leads to Tomsk.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
