A Coruña (Spanish: La Coruña) is a Galician city in the province of A Coruña, in the autonomous region of Galicia, Spain. It covers 37.83 sq km (14.61 sq mi) and has a population of 246,000 people (2012 estimate). A Coruña is the Galician name of the city while in English it is often known as Corunna. Today however, it appears more commonly as A Coruña or La Coruña, even in English.

Perhaps the most famous tourist sight in A Coruña is the Tower of Hercules, a lighthouse that dates back to the Roman period. It is today nearly two thousand years old, and has been in continuous use. No wonder that it is today inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The distinctive character of A Coruña is due to its glazed window balconies. Originally part of naval architecture, it became fashionable in the 18th century, when it was adopted in response to the city's often rainy weather.

Visiting A Coruña

You can fly to A Coruña from Madrid, Barcelona, London Heathrow, Amsterdam and Lisbon. EasyJet is among the low-cost carriers flying there. There are also trains from Madrid and Barcelona. If you are taking the road, use the A-6 motorway from Madrid heading in a northwest direction.
