Burgos is a city in the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, in Spain. It covers 108 sq km (42 sq mi) and has a population of 180,000 people (2012 estimate). It has many tourist attractions of which the most important is the Cathedral of Burgos, a World Heritage Site since 1984.

Human habitation in the Burgos area has been traced back as far as 800,000 years ago, a distinction it celebrates today with the Museum of Human Evolution. In more recent times, it was the Romans who established an encampment here over a Celtiberian city. After Roman influence waned, the site was conquered by the Visigoths. They were later replaced by invading Arabs. In the mid 9th century the region was conquered by Alfonso III the Great, the king of León, after which the area became known as Castile, meaning "land of castles".

Burgos itself was founded in AD 884. It began as an outpost at the frontier of Christian territory. It became the see of a Catholic bishop in the 11th century, and was a stopover point for pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The Camino de Santiago runs parallel to the River Arlanzón.

Visiting Burgos

Burgos Airport (LEBG) receives flights only from Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. It is therefore more convenient to reach Burgos by train, with services from Madrid as well as other cities in Spain including Barcelona and Bilbao.
