Murcia is a city in southeastern Spain. It is the capital and biggest city in the autonomous community of the region of Murcia. With a population of 440,000 (2011 estimate) it is also the seventh biggest city in Spain.

Murcia is located on the banks of the Segura River. It is the capital of the main agricultural region of Spain, with much of the fruits, vegetables and flowers grown in the hinterland shipped through here. The area is noted for its mild climate and scarce precipitation.

Although the area around Murcia has been settled since Roman times, the city that stands today was established around AD 825 by Abd ar-Rahman II, the Emir of Al-Andalus. The city achieved much prosperity in the 18th century based on its silk industry, resulting in the construction of many of the city's churches and landmark buildings.

The main tourist sights in Murcia includes its cathedral and baroque architecture. Perhaps the most famous artist from Murcia is sculptor Francisco Salzillo (1707-1783).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
