Luleå is a coastal town in northern Sweden, where Lule Bay meets the Gulf of Bothnia. This lovely Swedish town is practically surrounded by water, as the Luleälven River flows through it into a network of islets in the bay. It is the capital of Norrbotten County. Covering 28.81 sq km (11.1 sq mi), it has a population of 45,000 (2011 estimate).

There are some 700 islands in the Luleå archipelago. The town was sited here to take advantage of the natural harbor. The town is believed to have been established in the 13th century, and was granted a Royal charter in 1621. The old town, famous for its village church, is today a World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1996 as "Church Village of Gammelstad, Luleå".

Luleå experiences a subarctic climate of short, cool summers and long, cold winters. The warmest month is July, when the average high temperature reaches 19°C (66°F). Coldest month are January and February, when the average low temperature drops to -16°C (3°F). August is the wettest month in Luleå, with 64 mm (2.52 in) of precipitation.

Visiting Luleå

The easiest way to reach Luleå is to take a flight there from Stockholm. The flight time is about an hour and ten minutes. From the airport, you can take a shuttle bus or taxi to the city. Luleå also receives flights from Gothenburg, Kiruna, Umeå, Riga and Murmansk.
